The Tide That Took the Sandcastle Away

Ocean water rises and falls with the tides, and waves can smooth sand back into the beach.

The whole story

1. Early in the morning, Maya carried her bucket to the shining beach.

2. Maya packed wet sand into towers and crowned them with shells.

3. Maya added a shell gate, a sand bridge, and one deep moat.

4. Then a small wave filled the moat and touched the castle wall.

5. Maya built a higher wall, but the next wave came farther.

6. The tide rose, and the ocean water took the sandcastle away.

7. Maya held the little shell and watched the water slide back.

8. Soon the tide fell, and fresh sand appeared beside Maya.

9. Maya made a new castle, smaller and closer to the open beach.
