Why Do Rabbits Freeze and Listen?

Rabbits have big ears and may hold still to hear better when they notice a new sound.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, a small rabbit nibbled clover beside the meadow path.

2. The rabbit heard bees humming, leaves rustling, and water trickling nearby.

3. Then a new sound came from behind the leafy hedge.

4. The rabbit stopped chewing and held its whole body very still.

5. The rabbit listened carefully, but the new sound was hard to place.

6. Its big ears gathered the sound from the gate, grass, and stream.

7. At last, the rabbit heard the sound again: tap, tap, tap.

8. A little seedpod tapped the gate whenever the breeze touched it.

9. The rabbit lowered its ears and returned to the sweet clover.
