The Class Pet Escaped Into the School's Walls

A class hamster reveals a maze of forgotten tunnels behind the school, where students have hidden their unfinished promises for years.

The whole story

1. At three o’clock on Friday afternoon, Mara Vale held out a carrot in Room 12. Pip, the class hamster, slipped through a loose grate behind the radiator before she could announce snack time.

2. Mara dropped to her knees and pressed one ear to the wall. A squeak, a scrape, and some suspicious chewing came from inside. She had promised to get Pip safely into his cage before the weekend, and an empty cage was not how a promise was supposed to end.

3. The squeak led Mara to a loose baseboard beneath the coat hooks. Behind it waited a narrow passage with brass edges and a faint stripe of golden light. Pip’s whiskers appeared in the opening, as if he had found a door no grown-up had noticed.

4. Mara crouched into the passage, and the school changed its voice around her. Pipes whispered, floorboards thumped overhead, and every tiny squeak returned three times. Pip sat on a pipe ahead, looking pleased with himself.

5. At the first fork, Pip sat beside three low arches with his cheeks full of carrot. Mara pointed to the middle arch, but Pip chose the one marked by a blue stripe, as if he had always known the way.

6. The blue stripe ended at a dusty nook full of forgotten things. Mara lifted a crooked wooden crown, and it landed over her head with only her eyes showing. Pip sat on a pile of ribbons, looking like a king who had misplaced his castle.

7. Behind the next arch, shelves held a toy boat without a sail, three smooth stones, a jar of buttons, and a tiny volcano with no top. Each object had a loop of string around it, as though someone had tied a promise to it and then forgotten the knot.

8. Mara remembered the school’s old stories. The play had never been finished, the courtyard garden had never been planted, and the lucky button had never been returned. The objects were not rubbish. They were reminders that students had tucked away when their promises became too awkward, too difficult, or too easy to postpone.

9. At the far end, the blue stripe stopped beside a loose brick. Pip rested one paw against it, and a square of blue afternoon appeared beyond. Mara understood then: Pip had not been lost. He had been showing her the way.

10. By Monday morning, Pip sat safely in his cage with a carrot between his paws, while Mara stood beside the old opening and told the class what she had found. Pip had revealed a maze of forgotten tunnels behind the school, where students had hidden their unfinished promises for years.
