1. Nova pressed her nose against the window of her ship and watched the purple planet grow larger.
2. The landing was soft, and Nova stepped out into a world where the grass shimmered like bells.
3. A tall figure glided over the grass and stopped before her. 'You are the first to arrive in many seasons,' it said.
4. The alien led Nova to a village of round houses. 'This is the Stone of Answers,' it said, 'but we may only ask one question in a lifetime. Choose wisely.'
5. Nova sat down on a low wall. She had so many questions: about the stars, about the aliens, about the stone. But she said nothing.
6. That evening, Nova watched the villagers gather. They did not speak much, but they listened. When someone spoke, the others leaned in, as if every word was precious.
7. Nova sat by the fire and listened. She heard about a child who asked why the stars twinkle, and who never asked anything again. She heard about a farmer who asked where the rain came from, and who spent the rest of his life watching the sky.
8. That night, Nova lay in the grass and looked at the stars. She had always wanted to ask them why they were so far away. But now, she wondered what they might say if she just listened.
9. In the morning, Nova stood before the Stone of Answers. The alien said, 'You have one question. Ask, and you will know.'
10. Nova turned away from the stone. 'I don't have a question,' she said. 'I think I'd rather listen.'
11. When Nova climbed back into her ship, the villagers gathered to wave goodbye. The tall alien said, 'You are the first to leave without an answer. You are welcome here always.'
12. As Nova flew away, she thought about all the questions she'd never asked. And she smiled, because she had heard more than any answer could ever give her.
