My Best Friend Became Famous for My Mistake

After an accident earns the wrong child praise, two friends struggle with envy, guilt, and the harder work of telling the whole story.

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, I painted the last feather on our invention. It was a little wooden bird that could flap its wings when the wind turned its pinwheel.

2. My best friend, Leo, had built the frame. I had painted the bird and tested the wings. By lunchtime, we were sure our names belonged on the same display card.

3. Then I pinched the wrong wire. The bird jerked, its wings snapped open, and the pinwheel spun so fast that paint flew onto the ceiling.

4. At the fair, the bird worked better than it ever had. When Leo touched the switch, it flapped, twirled, and lifted a paper feather into the air.

5. The judges gave Leo the blue ribbon for clever design. People crowded around him, asking how he had made the bird fly.

6. I told myself the ribbon was ours. Still, when someone called Leo a genius, I pressed my thumb against the edge of the card and wished they had said my name.

7. By Monday, the school newsletter called Leo an inventor. I laughed when he showed me the article, but the laugh came out thin and crooked.

8. That evening, I wrote, “The bird was my idea,” then folded the paper until the sentence disappeared. I did not write about the wire.

9. On Tuesday, Leo asked me to help explain the invention at assembly. I said I had homework, though my notebook was still empty.

10. Leo found me after school. “Why are you avoiding me?” he asked. I held up the wire and said, “Because everyone thinks you did everything.”

11. Leo stared at the wire. “I thought you fixed that part,” he said. Then he looked at the ribbon. “I should have told them we made it together.”

12. We went to our teacher and told the whole story: Leo built the frame, I painted the bird, and my mistake made the wings burst open at the fair.

13. The teacher changed the display card and invited both of us to speak. Leo kept the ribbon, but he stopped calling it his.

14. On the walk home, people still congratulated Leo. This time, he pointed to me before he answered, and I told the part I had tried to hide.
