The Cave Painted Pictures of Things We Had Not Done YetExplorers find cave paintings of future choices, and one child proves the images are warnings, not orders.
1. At first light, Nera crouched beside the limestone hill and brushed leaves from an old surveyor’s mark. She had come to find the hidden cave before anyone could tell her it was only a story.
2. Ivo arrived with a wooden lantern just as Nera found a slit behind the ferns. He held the light high, and together they stepped into the hill, leaving the bright morning at their backs.
3. The first chamber was wider than the hill above it. Red, black, and white paintings covered the walls: a hand opening a gate, a child choosing a blue passage, and a basket left beside a pool. None of those things belonged to yesterday.
4. Then Nera found two painted figures at a fork. One wore a yellow coat, and one wore a green jacket. They stood beside a round stone lever while blue water climbed around their boots. A narrow opening waited beside them.
5. The tunnel bent twice and opened into the very chamber from the wall. The round lever waited on one side, and a white crystal gleamed on the other. Nera’s compass trembled in her palm.
6. Nera reached toward the lever, because she wanted to know whether the wall had truly seen them. Ivo caught his breath. If she moved the stone, the painted water might become more than paint.
7. Nera’s hand stopped. Beneath the first scene, a film of pale mineral hid another painting: the lever untouched, the crystal left in its place, and two figures choosing the narrow opening. The cave had shown more than one way forward.
8. Instead of touching the lever, Nera held her compass near the crack. A thread of dust leaned toward it, and cool air brushed her face. They had found a different choice, one the wall had left waiting.
9. The side passage opened onto a meadow bright with late-morning sun. Behind them, the painted water still climbed around painted boots, but no water touched the real stone. Nera had changed the picture by refusing to obey it.
10. On a flat stone, Nera drew the path they had taken and the path they had not. Ivo wanted to tell everyone about the cave at once, but Nera kept looking toward the untouched crystal.
11. They would return with measuring rope and careful questions, not with a hand reaching for whatever shone. The paintings had shown them choices that might come next, but they had not made Nera’s hand move or made Ivo follow. They were warnings, not orders.
