The whole story

1. On festival afternoon, Mali knelt beside the river with a basket of thank-you notes. She wanted every note to float away with a lantern.

2. She wrote one note for Grandma, one for the temple cooks, and one for the river. Then she stopped. What could she say to a river?

3. Grandma touched the water with two fingers. “Thank the river for carrying our boats and feeding our gardens,” she said. “And promise to keep it clean.”
