The Bread Ballooned Bigger Than the Basket

In an Ethiopian kitchen, a child watches injera batter bubble and learns how one large shared flatbread can bring many hands to one meal.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Hana carried the little basket into the kitchen. Today, she would help make injera.

2. Grandmother mixed the batter until it was smooth. “Make it wide,” Hana said. “The basket is waiting.”

3. Grandmother poured a careful circle onto the hot mitad. Hana watched the batter spread like a pale river.

4. Then the bread bubbled. One bubble became ten, and ten became a hundred.

5. The bread ballooned bigger than the basket. “It will not fit!” Hana cried.

6. Grandmother smiled. “Then we will not make it small. We will make room.”

7. Hana called the neighbors and cousins. Each person brought a dish, a hand, or a hungry smile.

8. The big bread covered the table. It held every dish, and there was room for every hand.

9. Hana gave the first piece to Grandmother. Grandmother gave the next one to Hana.

10. The basket stayed empty, but no one went hungry. One large shared bread had brought many hands to one meal.
