The Shoes That Clicked Faster Than My Feet

The whole story

1. In Seville, Spain, I held my new flamenco shoe to my ear. It clicked once, as if it had a secret.

2. I fastened both shoes and stood tall. Click, click. My feet answered, but not in the right order.

3. Our teacher, Elena, showed us a heel tap. I tried it once. Then my shoes clicked three times before I could stop.

4. I tried again. My left foot went right, my right foot went left, and both shoes became very proud of themselves.

5. At practice, everyone sounded neat except me. I sat on the step and tied my shoe again.

6. Elena tapped her chest and lifted her chin. “Your strong feelings need somewhere to go,” she said. “Give them a rhythm.”

7. I clapped once. I tapped my heel. I stood taller than my worry.

8. Clap, heel, heel. Clap, heel, heel. My shoes still clicked fast, but now my feet knew where to go.

9. The claps joined the taps. The taps joined my breath. My strong feelings had found a song.

10. When my shoes clicked faster than my feet, I did not hide. I clapped, tapped, stood tall, and let the music carry me home.
