The Mooncakes Were Too Beautiful to Eat First

The whole story

1. On Mid-Autumn afternoon, Mei arranged the mooncakes in a shining circle. She placed the rabbit mooncake in the middle.

2. “They are too beautiful to eat first,” Mei whispered. Grandma smiled, but her stomach gave a tiny growl.

3. Mei set the lanterns outside and saved a chair for every faraway aunt, uncle, and cousin.

4. Then the tablet chimed. Mei’s father and little cousin appeared from a city far away.

5. Mei lifted the rabbit mooncake for everyone to see. Her cousin held up a mooncake shaped like a flower.

6. They compared patterns, counted lanterns, and told stories about the moon. The mooncakes waited, very patiently.

7. At last, the full moon climbed above the roofs. Mei put the plate where everyone could see it.

8. “Now they are beautiful and delicious,” Mei said. Everyone took one bite together.

9. Mei looked from the lanterns to the moon, then to the faces far away. They were all sharing the same sky.

10. The mooncakes were too beautiful to eat first. But eaten together, they made the faraway family feel near.
