The Tea Was Poured From Higher Than My Head

At a tea gathering in Morocco, a child learns how pouring tea carefully can show welcome, patience, and care for guests.

The whole story

1. Noura carried the tea tray across the rooftop as the afternoon sun warmed Marrakech.

2. Her grandmother had asked her to help welcome the guests. Noura wanted to pour the tea perfectly.

3. Grandmother showed her how to hold the pot with two steady hands. “Slowly,” she said. “Let the tea find its place.”

4. Noura lifted the pot high, but her hands wobbled. A tiny splash landed on the saucer.

5. Noura put the pot down. Grandmother added mint and waited for the leaves to soften. “Tea needs time,” she said.

6. While the tea rested, Noura set out dates and glasses. She checked each place twice.

7. At last, Noura tried again. She held the pot high, poured slowly, and made a bright little crown of foam.

8. The guests arrived, and Noura offered the first glass with both hands. The visitor received it with a smile.

9. Noura poured for everyone. She waited when a guest was still talking, and she noticed when a glass was empty.

10. When the last glass was full, Noura sat down at the gathering. The tea was poured from higher than her head, but its welcome felt close enough to hold.
