The Painted Eggs Would Not Keep Their Secrets

The whole story

1. On a bright spring morning, Oksana leaned over the kitchen table and drew a tiny wax line on an egg.

2. Her grandmother, Baba Kateryna, showed her how to warm the stylus and let the wax fall in a thin, shining thread.

3. Oksana tried a spiral, but it leaned like a sleepy worm. She tried a sun, but one ray curled away.

4. “Perfect lines are not the secret,” Baba Kateryna said. “Careful lines are.” Oksana made a ring of leaves.

5. First came yellow, the color of sunshine. Under the wax, Oksana's lines waited like little secrets.

6. Then came red, warm as a berry. Oksana dipped the egg again, and the hidden lines kept their sunny color.

7. At last, Baba Kateryna warmed the wax and Oksana wiped it away. A bright pattern appeared where the plain shell had been.

8. Oksana's egg had a sunny ring, red bands, and leaves that pointed toward spring. It was not perfect, but it was hers.

9. Baba Kateryna placed an old egg beside it. “Your great-grandmother made this one,” she said. “It carried her wish for a good harvest.”

10. Oksana began another egg. She drew blue waves for peace, green leaves for home, and a red sun for the family gathered around the table.
