The Soup Pot That Needed the Whole Village

In a Caribbean neighborhood, a child sees how many small contributions can turn one pot of soup into a celebration of helping.

The whole story

1. On Saturday morning, Maya carried a big blue pot into the village square. She wanted to make soup for everyone.

2. Maya put the pot on the stove. Then she opened her basket. It held one small onion.

3. Miss Celia brought a pumpkin. “A soup needs something sunny,” she said. Maya tucked it into her basket.

4. Tariq brought three plantains. “They were leaning over my fence,” he said. “They wanted to help.”

5. Then Alana shared red beans from her kitchen. The pot looked less empty, but it still had room for more.

6. Mr. Joseph brought water from the spring. Maya stirred the vegetables, the beans, and the plantains together.

7. More neighbors came with thyme, pepper, coconut milk, and sweet potatoes. Each gift was small. Together, they made a wonderful smell.

8. At last, Maya tasted the soup. She blinked. It was delicious, but the pot was not full enough for the whole village.

9. Maya sat beside the pot. “I wanted one big gift,” she whispered. Miss Celia smiled. “Perhaps we need many little ones.”

10. A little more pumpkin went in. Then another plantain, another spoon of beans, and another sweet potato. The pot grew fuller with every helping hand.

11. Soon the pot brimmed with soup. There was enough for every bowl, and a little extra for second helpings.

12. Maya looked around the table. The soup had begun with one onion, but it had become a celebration of helping. The whole village had filled the pot.
