The Little Red Hen Asks Who Will Help

A hen plants, cuts, grinds, and bakes while no one helps, so only she enjoys the bread she worked for.

The whole story

1. One bright morning, the small red hen found a golden wheat seed.

2. “Who will help me plant this seed?” asked the little red hen.

3. “Not I,” said the cat, goose, and pig, so the hen planted it herself.

4. When the wheat grew tall, the little red hen asked who would help cut it.

5. “Not I,” they answered, so the little red hen ground the wheat alone.

6. Then the little red hen mixed the dough and asked who would help bake it.

7. “Not I,” they answered, so she baked the golden loaf herself.

8. At supper, the cat, goose, and pig asked who would eat the bread.

9. “I will,” said the little red hen, and she enjoyed the bread she worked for.
