The Rooster Wakes the Sun Too Early

A rooster thinks his crow makes the sun rise, then learns the sun arrives even when he sleeps late.

The whole story

1. Before sunrise, the proud rooster flapped onto his perch and crowed.

2. The sun peeked over the hill, so Rooster puffed out his chest.

3. “My crow wakes the sun,” he told the sleepy brown hen.

4. Each morning, Rooster crowed earlier, and everyone woke earlier.

5. Soon Rooster crowed before the stars had finished twinkling.

6. One morning, Rooster tucked his head beneath his wing and slept.

7. When Rooster opened his eyes, warm sunlight filled the henhouse.

8. The sun had arrived without his crow, right on its usual time.

9. Rooster crowed anyway, but he no longer claimed the sun.

10. The sun rises when it is ready, even when Rooster sleeps late.
