2. The traveler filled the pot with water and placed one smooth stone inside.

3. The traveler stirred the water and said, “This stone makes fine soup.”

4. The elderly woman brought three carrots and dropped them into the warm water.

5. The man added red beans, and the traveler stirred the growing soup.

6. The child added green peas, and the soup began to smell like supper.

7. More villagers brought greens, potatoes, salt, and the last things they could share.

8. At sunset, the traveler lifted out the stone, and everyone shared the soup.
