The Turtle Carries a House on His Back

A turtle feels slow until a sudden rain shows the other animals how useful a carried home can be.

The whole story

1. At morning, a small green turtle carried a red berry along the meadow path.

2. The rabbit raced past him and called, “You are slow, little turtle.”

3. The turtle placed his berry down and watched the rabbit disappear.

4. The turtle wondered why his house had to travel so slowly.

5. Still, he picked up his berry and carried it toward the hill.

6. Gray clouds gathered, and the first raindrops dotted the warm hill.

7. Rain poured down, and the rabbit and duck searched for shelter.

8. The turtle lowered his shell, and the animals slipped underneath.

9. The rabbit tucked in close, and the duck dried her wings beside him.

10. “Your house is wonderful,” said the rabbit, while rain drummed above.

11. The turtle carried his house, his berry, and his friends home.

12. The turtle still walked slowly, but his house made a safe place wherever he went.
