2. Pip had baked the cake, but Mallow had carried the honey and stirred the batter. They agreed that half should belong to each of them.
3. But the slices did not look equal. Pip said Mallow had taken the larger piece. Mallow said Pip had cut it crooked on purpose.
4. A brown monkey named Judge Kito heard the quarrel from a fig tree. He climbed down slowly, wearing a purple waistcoat and the serious expression of someone who enjoyed being asked.
5. “A judge must inspect the evidence,” Kito declared. “Then I will divide the cake so fairly that neither of you can complain.”
6. Kito placed one piece in each paw and tilted his head. “This one is heavier,” he said. “A fair judge must correct the balance.”
7. He took a careful bite from the heavier piece. “There,” he said. “Now they are closer.”
8. The pieces still did not match. Kito nibbled the larger one again, then the other, always finding a new difference that required another correction.
9. At last, Pip pulled the cake plate toward himself. “Stop correcting,” he said. “The evidence is disappearing.”
10. Mallow lifted the plate. Only crumbs remained. Kito swallowed and bowed. “The portions are perfectly equal now,” he announced.
11. Pip and Mallow stared at the empty plate, then at Kito. Their quarrel had begun with a cake and ended by feeding the judge.
12. The next cake was cut by both cats at once. They checked the halves together, and neither invited Judge Kito to taste the evidence.
