The Crab Who Corrected a Path She Also Walked Crooked

A crab scolds her child for moving sideways, then sees that advice has weight only when the teacher examines herself.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Mother Crab set out across the tidal flat with her child beside her. They were carrying breakfast home through the silver pools and soft sand.

2. The child took three quick steps sideways, then three more. Mother Crab lifted her large claw. “Keep to the path,” she said. “A sensible crab does not wander crookedly.”

3. Mother Crab drew a line in the sand. “Follow this,” she said. “Straight paths are easier to trust.” The child looked at the line, then at the sideways trail already beneath their feet.

4. The child tried to walk straight. It lasted only as long as one breath. Then the path bent, the basket bumped, and Mother Crab’s own feet carried her sideways around a pool.

5. At the creek, the child angled toward a dry crossing. “Not that way,” said Mother Crab. “You must learn to choose properly.” She stepped left, then right, then left again, searching for the best route.

6. The child studied the tracks. Mother Crab’s path was not a line at all. It curved around shells, slipped toward water, and crossed itself twice.

7. “You walk crooked too,” the child said. The words were small, but they landed heavily. Mother Crab opened her mouth, closed it, and looked down at her feet.

8. Mother Crab pressed her claw into the sand beside the child’s trail. “You are right,” she said. “I have been asking you to do what I have not examined in myself.”

9. They chose the dry crossing together. Mother Crab still walked sideways, and so did the child. This time, neither pretended that a crooked path could be made straight by scolding.

10. By the time they reached home, the basket was full and the tide was turning. Mother Crab glanced at their two crooked trails and said, “Advice has weight only when the teacher examines herself.”
