The Horse Who Refused One Sack and Carried Two

A horse will not help a tired donkey with a small load, then must carry everything after the donkey collapses from exhaustion.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Rowan the horse pulled an empty cart toward the mill. Beside him, Pip the donkey carried one small sack of grain.

2. Before they reached the bridge, Pip said, “Rowan, would you carry my sack for a while? It is small, but the road is long.”

3. Rowan shook his mane. “One sack becomes a habit,” he said. “You have four legs. Use them.” Pip lowered his head and kept walking.

4. The bridge boards creaked beneath Pip’s hooves. Rowan heard him panting, but the mill roof was already shining beyond the trees.

5. Under an oak tree, Pip stopped to breathe. Rowan looked back once, then pulled the cart onward. The sack was small, but Pip’s steps were growing smaller too.

6. At last they reached the mill. Rowan stood tall beside the cart, while Pip swayed beneath his single sack.

7. Pip took one more step, then folded gently onto the grass. The farmer loosened the rope and brought him water, but Pip could not rise.

8. The farmer carried Pip to a warm bed of straw. Then he placed Pip’s sack beside the cart’s sack and fastened both to Rowan.

9. Rowan carried both sacks home. The road had not grown longer, but every step now felt like an answer.

10. When Pip could stand again, Rowan stayed beside him. Neither spoke about the small sack. Rowan understood it had never been small to Pip.
