The Turnip That Needed the Smallest Hands LastA giant turnip will not move until the tiniest helper joins the chain, proving that scale and importance are not the same thing.
1. Maya had planted a turnip seed in spring, and by autumn it had grown into a turnip the size of a wheelbarrow. "I'll pull it up for supper," she said, and she grabbed the leaves with both hands.
2. She pulled and pulled, but the turnip did not move. "It's stuck," she said. "I need help."
3. Her brother Leo came running from the house. "I'll help," he said. He grabbed Maya around the waist, and together they pulled. But the turnip stayed put.
4. Their father came out, wiping his hands on his apron. "Let me join," he said. He took hold of Leo's waist, and the three of them pulled together. The turnip didn't even wiggle.
5. Their mother came from the vegetable patch, where she had been picking beans. "I can help," she said, and she took hold of Father's waist. All four of them pulled until their feet slipped in the dirt. The turnip stayed.
6. Grandfather came out of the house, leaning on his cane. "Let me try," he said. He took hold of Mother's waist, and they all pulled together. The turnip still wouldn't move.
7. Grandmother came from the kitchen, drying her hands on her apron. "Make room for me," she said. She took hold of Grandfather's waist, and everyone pulled. The turnip did not budge.
8. They all stood around the turnip, breathing hard. "It's too big," said Leo. "We'll never get it out," said Father. Maya looked at the turnip and then at her family. She had an idea.
9. Maya knelt down and spoke to a little mouse that had been watching from the fence. "Little mouse," she said, "will you help us?" The mouse twitched its whiskers and nodded.
10. The mouse took hold of Grandmother's skirt, and they all pulled together. This time, the turnip started to move. The ground cracked, and the turnip began to rise.
11. The turnip popped out of the ground so suddenly that everyone fell over in a heap. They all laughed, and the mouse squeaked with joy.
12. That night, they all shared the turnip for supper. Maya gave the mouse the very first bite. "It was the smallest hands that did the biggest job," she said.
