The Wolf Who Wore Wool Until the Flock Counted Shadows

A disguised wolf fools the sheep at first, but careful attention to small signs saves the flock from trusting appearance alone.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Tansy carried a red apple up the hill for the oldest sheep. The flock was already gathering beside the gate, where the grass shone with dew.

2. A tall stranger waited at the gate, wrapped in a cream-colored wool cloak. When Tansy offered the apple, the stranger bowed and spoke in a gentle voice.

3. The stranger said, “I have lost my flock. May I graze with yours?” Tansy noticed mud on the cloak and something dark beneath its hem, but the soft wool looked convincing.

4. The flock made room. The stranger shared stories, carried a basket, and praised the meadow. By noon, even the cautious sheep were calling the newcomer a friend.

5. That afternoon, Tansy found a deep paw print beside the sheep tracks. It had no split hoof, and four sharp marks pressed into the mud.

6. Then a strip of wool snagged on a thorn. Beneath it was coarse gray fur, not fleece. Tansy showed the others, and they lowered their voices.

7. At the pond, Tansy watched the water instead of the cloak. The reflection had pointed ears, a long muzzle, and a tail that no sheep possessed.

8. Tansy did not shout, and she did not accuse. She asked the flock to count every shadow inside the pen before anyone opened the gate.

9. The flock counted twelve shadows inside the pen, all round-backed and short-eared. Beyond the fence stood one long shadow with pointed ears.

10. The wolf heard them counting and let the cloak fall. No one ran blindly; the shepherd came, the gate stayed fast, and the flock stood together.

11. Later, Tansy placed the torn wool beside the muddy paw print. The flock had trusted what looked familiar, but it was the little signs that kept them safe.
