The Empty Pot That Won Because Nothing Grew

A child brings an empty pot to a ruler after every planted seed fails, and honesty matters more than a beautiful lie.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Lin pressed the ruler’s seed into a clay pot and covered it with soil. Then Lin placed the pot on the brightest windowsill and waited.

2. Lin watered the soil just enough to make it damp. Every morning, Lin checked the pot before breakfast, hoping for a green curl.

3. A week passed, and nothing appeared. Lin loosened the soil, planted the seed again, and tried a warmer place. Still, the pot stayed brown and quiet.

4. Lin asked a gardener for advice. The gardener suggested new soil, less water, more water, and patience. Lin tried every suggestion, but no sprout broke the surface.

5. At last, Lin set the pot on the floor and stared at it. The seed had been planted carefully. The work had been honest. The result was still nothing.

6. On the appointed morning, children gathered in the square with pots overflowing with leaves and blossoms. Lin carried the empty pot with both hands and walked toward the ruler’s hall.

7. One by one, the children showed the ruler their thriving plants. When Lin’s turn came, Lin held up the empty pot and said, “I planted your seed, cared for it, and tried again. Nothing grew.”

8. The hall grew quiet. The ruler lifted the empty pot and smiled. “These seeds had been boiled,” the ruler said. “Nothing could grow from them.”

9. The ruler named Lin the next keeper of the garden. The children looked at their perfect plants, then at Lin’s empty pot, and understood what had won.

10. That evening, Lin placed the empty pot on the garden ledge. It held no flower, but it held the truth—and the truth was enough.
