A Pebble That Traveled the Whole River

A pebble tumbles downstream past every kind of place, and becomes smooth enough to fit a child's palm.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, a small pebble tumbled from a mountain spring into the river.

2. The pebble rolled beneath tall pines, where brown needles softened the stones.

3. The river carried the pebble past green meadows and yellow buttercups.

4. It bumped beneath a wooden bridge while swallows rested above.

5. In a red-rock gorge, the pebble pressed against a round stone as water curled past.

6. The river widened through reeds, and the pebble shone under the afternoon sun.

7. By sunset, the river placed the pebble beside a sandy shore, near a child's red sandals.

8. The pebble traveled the whole river and grew smooth enough to fit a child's palm.
