Waiting for the Bread to Rise

A child cannot believe dough grows on its own, and checks under the cloth every ten minutes all afternoon.

The whole story

1. On a sunny afternoon, Mia stirred flour beside her mother in the kitchen.

2. Mother poured warm water and yeast into the flour, and Mia stirred.

3. Mia pressed the sticky dough with both hands until it became smooth.

4. Mother placed the dough in a bowl and covered it with a clean cloth.

5. Mia lifted the cloth with one careful finger, but the dough looked small.

6. Mia checked beneath the cloth after ten minutes, but the dough looked almost the same.

7. She checked again ten minutes later, and one round edge looked bigger.

8. Mother said, “Dough grows slowly,” and Mia watched the covered bowl in late sunlight.

9. Mia could not believe dough grew on its own, so she checked under the cloth every ten minutes all afternoon.
