When the Game Changed Rules

A child feels upset when friends change a pretend game, then learns to ask, listen, and choose a new part.

The whole story

1. On Saturday afternoon, Maya waved her wand beside the blanket castle.

2. Maya was the queen, and Leo was her brave royal cook.

3. Then Nia joined them and made the castle a busy space station.

4. Maya gripped her wand because queens did not fly into space.

5. Maya sat on the grass while the new game grew around her.

6. Maya raised her hand and asked, “What is the space station supposed to do?”

7. Leo said the station needed a cook, and Nia needed a shield captain.

8. Maya listened, then asked, “Could I choose one of those parts?”

9. Maya chose the shield, while Leo kept the wooden spoon.

10. Maya guarded the station, and the new game became theirs together.
