The Nap I Was Not Ready For

A child does not feel sleepy, rests with quiet toys, and discovers the body can rest even before sleep comes.

The whole story

1. After lunch, I stood beside my bed with my red train. I was not sleepy.

2. I lined up my red train and blue bus, ready for more play.

3. My caregiver closed the curtains and said, “It is quiet-time now.”

4. I squeezed my train and said, “My eyes are wide open.”

5. I tried lying down, but my thoughts hopped like little toy trains.

6. My caregiver brought quiet toys and said, “You can rest without sleeping.”

7. I stacked three blocks slowly, keeping the red train close beside me.

8. The train rolled softly along its track, and my hands grew still.

9. I listened to the quiet room, and my body became heavy on the rug.

10. I was still not sleepy, but my body was resting, and that was enough.
