The Turnip That Moved Only for the Smallest Pull

A family cannot pull up a giant turnip until every helper, including the smallest one, joins the line.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, Mina tugged the biggest turnip in the garden. It did not budge.

2. Mina leaned back. She pulled until her boots left two little holes. The turnip stayed put.

3. “I will help,” called Grandma. Mina held the leaves, and Grandma held Mina.

4. Dad joined the line. Mina pulled, Grandma pulled, and Dad pulled. The turnip gave one tiny wiggle.

5. The dog, Biscuit, grabbed Dad’s scarf. The line grew longer, but the turnip only wiggled.

6. Then a tiny field mouse appeared. “May I help?” asked the mouse. Everyone made room.

7. The smallest helper took the smallest place. “Ready?” called Mina. “Pull!”

8. Mina pulled with Grandma. Grandma pulled with Dad. Dad pulled with Biscuit, and Biscuit pulled with the mouse. The giant turnip popped free!

9. The turnip was enormous. It filled three baskets and one hungry afternoon. Mina smiled at the tiny mouse. The smallest pull had made the biggest difference.
