The Oak That Mocked the Bending ReedA proud oak laughs at a reed for bending, until a storm shows that flexibility can survive what strength cannot.
1. On a bright summer morning, the proud oak spread its branches beside the stream. The slender reed leaned toward the water.
2. The oak looked down at the reed. “Why do you bow to every breeze?” it asked. “Stand tall like me.”
3. The reed lifted its narrow leaves as far as it could. “I bend so I can meet the wind,” it said.
4. The oak gave a deep, wooden chuckle. “The wind should meet me,” it said. “I do not bend for anything.”
5. By afternoon, the sky had filled with rushing clouds. The wind pushed hard, and the reed bent nearly to the water.
6. The oak clung to its stiff shape. A sharp crack sounded, and one heavy branch fell into the soft grass.
7. Then the storm moved on. The reed slowly rose, still rooted by the stream. The oak stood quieter than before.
8. The oak lowered its branches. “You were right,” it said. “Bending helped you stay.” The reed bowed once, and this time the oak bowed too.
