1. At sunrise, Pip the tailor climbed onto his stool. He had a grand red cloak to finish before breakfast.
2. Then three villagers hurried in. “The hill giant has taken our bridge,” they cried. “Who will make him give it back?”
3. Pip tucked his needle case into his belt. “I will go,” he said. “Tell the giant that the strongest tailor in the valley is coming.”
4. The villagers packed Pip a lunch, and he set off with an ox named Button. Pip walked briskly, though his legs were very short.
5. Three mountain goats blocked the path. Pip spread his red cloak wide. “Make room,” he boomed. “The giant’s tailor is passing through.”
6. The goats whispered, “His cloak must be hiding enormous muscles.” They stepped aside at once. Pip gave Button a tiny wink.
7. At last, Pip reached the bridge. The hill giant had carried it away to mend his castle door.
8. Pip called across the water, “Giant! I have come to measure your door and collect the bridge.”
9. The giant blinked. “You?” he asked. Pip nodded. “I measure doors before I move bridges. It is a very important rule.”
10. The giant held one end of Pip’s tape. Pip measured the doorway, the hinges, and even the giant’s left boot.
11. “It is three giant strides too far from home,” Pip announced. “Please put it back where it belongs.”
12. The giant put the bridge back. “You are very strong,” he said. Pip smiled. “My words are strong enough to open a door.”
13. By supper, everyone had heard that Pip was mighty. Pip only stitched a loose button and let the story grow.
14. That night, Pip packed his needle and smiled. A little tailor could face a very big world when he measured it with wit.
