The Turtle Who Wanted to Fly Without ListeningA turtle gets carried through the sky by birds but opens his mouth to boast, losing the ride he was warned to keep quiet for.
1. At sunrise, Tully the turtle stretched his legs toward the sky. He wanted to fly.
2. Two geese named Pip and Poppy saw him. “We can carry you,” said Pip. “But you must listen carefully.”
3. “Bite this stick,” said Poppy. “Hold tight, and do not open your mouth.” Tully nodded.
4. Up they went. Tully saw the river turn into a silver ribbon and the trees shrink below.
5. The meadow animals pointed up. Tully wanted to tell them, “I am flying!” But the stick filled his mouth.
6. “Mmmph!” said Tully. Pip shook his head. Poppy shook hers too. Tully knew what they meant.
7. Then Tully heard the animals cheering. He forgot the warning. He opened his mouth to boast.
8. The stick slipped away. Tully landed in soft clover with a plop. Nothing was hurt, except his pride.
9. Pip and Poppy helped him stand. Tully took a slow breath and listened. “Next time,” he said, “I will keep quiet until we land.”
10. The next morning, Tully flew again. This time, he listened all the way to the other side.
