The Mitten That Tried to Hold the Whole Forest

A lost mitten stretches around one animal after another until the smallest sneeze proves that even kindness needs room.

The whole story

1. On a bright winter morning, a lost mitten lay beneath a pine tree. It was deep red, warm, and much too big for one hand.

2. A small gray field mouse with round black eyes, round ears, a pink nose, a moss-green scarf, and a tiny brown satchel found it first. He tucked himself inside. “Roomy!” he squeaked.

3. A plump brown rabbit came hopping through the snow. “May I share?” he asked. The mouse scooted over, and the rabbit folded in beside him.

4. A red fox kit padded over with snow on his whiskers. The rabbit made room. The mouse made a little more room. The mitten stretched around all three.

5. Then a round hedgehog arrived. His spines poked out like a brush. “There is always room for one more,” said the fox, though his nose was pressed against the mitten wall.

6. A broad black badger brought a chilly nose and two orange mittens. Everyone squeezed tighter. The mitten stretched from a hand-sized pouch into a forest-sized pocket.

7. At sunset, a tall moose lowered his head. “Is there room for a fellow with antlers?” he asked. The animals pulled the mitten wide. The moose tucked in his nose, then one antler, then the other.

8. The mitten bulged like a red snowball. Tails curled over ears. Antlers tickled the cuff. Still, nobody wanted to leave anyone out.

9. A tiny yellow chick shivered at the mitten’s edge. Every animal made one last squeeze. The chick slipped inside, safe and warm.

10. Inside, the chick’s nose began to wiggle. It wiggled once. It wiggled twice. Then the smallest voice in the forest said, “Achoo!”

11. Pop! The mitten sprang open, and everyone landed in a soft heap. The moose wore the mitten like a hat. The rabbit wore it like a boot.

12. The mitten had tried to hold the whole forest. It had held kindness, too. But even kindness needs room to breathe—and sneeze.
