1. At sunrise, Mother Crab took her child to the smooth beach. “Today, you will learn to walk straight,” she said.
2. Mother Crab placed three shells in a row. “Put one foot before the other,” she said. “Keep your eyes on the path.”
3. The child tried. One foot went left. Another went right. “That is not straight,” said Mother Crab.
4. The child tilted her head. “Which way do you walk?” she asked.
5. Mother Crab lifted her chin. “I walk straight,” she said. Then she stepped sideways around a rock.
6. The child pointed at Mother Crab’s footprints. They curved around the rock, then curved back again.
7. Mother Crab looked at the crooked trail. She looked at her child. Then she took a slow breath.
8. “Come,” she said. “We will try together.” Mother Crab placed each foot beside a shell. Her child copied her.
9. Step by step, they reached the last shell. Their footprints made one straight line.
10. Mother Crab smiled. “Now you know how to walk straight.” The child smiled back. “Now you know how to show me.”
11. Together, they walked straight toward the shining sea. This time, Mother Crab’s feet matched her words.
