1. At sunrise, a small rabbit named Rumi tapped his paw on a warm stone. The little animals had stopped drinking at the well.
2. A fierce lion guarded the well. He roared, "This water is mine!" Then he stretched beneath the acacia tree.
3. Rumi gathered the smaller animals. "We need water," whispered the meerkat. Rumi's ears rose. "Then we need a clever plan."
4. Rumi visited the well alone. Its water was still as a mirror. He leaned over and saw a rabbit staring back.
5. Rumi touched the water with a reed. The rabbit below wobbled and vanished. When the water rested, he appeared again.
6. Rumi woke the lion with a polite cough. "Great Lion, another lion has come to take your well." The lion's mane bristled.
7. The lion followed Rumi to the well. He bent over the water and saw a fierce lion staring back.
8. The lion roared. The rival roared too. He shook his mane, and the rival shook his mane.
9. The lion lifted one paw. The rival lifted one paw. "He copies you," said Rumi. "He must be very bold."
10. The lion took one step back. The rival took one step back. "That is enough copying!" he cried, and he fled across the grass.
11. The smaller animals hurried to the well. They drank, splashed, and filled their little cups. Rumi drank last.
12. The well held only one lion, and he was not a lion at all. He was a reflection, frightened by a rabbit's brave idea.
