2. “I found it first,” said Mira. “I chose it first,” said Tomas.
3. They argued beside the apple tree. Soon, neither child was playing.
4. Their mother came from the kitchen with a bundle of dry sticks. She had an idea.
5. Mother handed Mira one slender stick. “Can you break it?”
6. Mira pressed hard. Crack! The stick broke in two.
7. Tomas tried one too. Crack! Soon, every single stick was broken.
8. Then Mother tied the sticks tightly together. “Now try this.”
9. Mira pulled. Tomas pulled. The bundle stayed strong.
10. “One stick is easy to snap,” Mother said. “Together, the sticks are strong.”
11. Mira filled the basket. Tomas pulled the cart. The work became easy.
12. That evening, Mira and Tomas shared the cart. Together, they carried more than either could carry alone.
