The Fox Who Invited the Stork to a Flat PlateA fox serves soup on a plate the stork cannot use, then receives dinner in a tall jar and understands unfair teasing.
1. Late one golden afternoon, an adult red fox with russet-orange fur, a white muzzle and chest, black-tipped ears, bright amber eyes, a fluffy white-tipped tail, a green vest, a blue neckerchief, and a small woven basket carried soup through the forest.
2. The fox met an adult stork with white feathers, charcoal-black wing tips, a long coral beak, long coral legs, and round golden eyes. “Please join me for dinner tonight,” said the fox.
3. At sunset, the fox set the table. He stirred a fragrant vegetable soup and hummed as he worked.
4. The fox poured soup into a flat plate. “There you are!” he said. “Eat up.”
5. The stork tried to sip. Her long beak tapped the plate, but it could not reach the soup. She tried again.
6. The fox spooned up his own soup. “What a funny little beak tap!” he chuckled. The stork said nothing.
7. The stork thanked the fox for the invitation. Her stomach rumbled softly as she walked home.
8. The next evening, the stork invited the fox to dinner. She served warm soup in a tall jar.
9. The fox bent over the jar. He reached and sniffed, but the opening was too narrow for his paws and muzzle.
10. The stork slipped her long beak into the jar and ate happily. The fox sat with an empty stomach and a very quiet tail.
11. The fox looked at the jar, then at the stork. “Now I understand,” he said. “My plate was not a fair invitation.”
12. The fox apologized. After that, he and the stork chose dishes that suited them both, and every dinner tasted better.
