1. At sunrise, twelve-year-old Mara carried a full pail of milk along the country lane. She held it carefully and took small, steady steps.
2. At the market, Mara would sell the milk for a bright silver coin. She began to imagine what that coin could do.
3. First, she would buy a warm red scarf for winter. Then she would buy a blue bowl for her little brother and golden seeds for the garden.
4. If the coin stretched far enough, she would buy a little stool, a loaf of honey bread, and perhaps a yellow hen.
5. Mara pictured the hen laying eggs. She pictured the eggs becoming cakes. She pictured the cakes becoming a grand feast.
6. The future grew so splendid that Mara could not keep her feet still. She gave a little hop.
7. The hop became a twirl. The twirl tipped the pail. Down went the milk, and with it went the scarf, the bowl, the seeds, the stool, the bread, and the hen.
8. Mara sat down beside the empty pail. The grass drank the milk, while her grand feast became a very small puddle.
9. Mara picked up the pail and made a new plan. First, she would carry the milk to market. Then she would dream.
10. She took one small step, then another. The future could wait until the milk arrived.
