At late afternoon, a small red fox reached for a red apple. His blue basket was empty, and his stomach rumbled.

1. At late afternoon, a small red fox reached for a red apple. His blue basket was empty, and his stomach rumbled.
2. Then the wind boomed from the meadow. The fox dropped his paw and listened.
3. BOOM! The sound rolled across the grass. The fox hid behind a fern.
4. The boom came again. The fox imagined a giant stomping closer, one enormous foot at a time.
5. But the fox was hungry. He took one careful step, then another, toward the booming sound.
6. He reached the drum and peeked inside. There was no giant. There was no creature at all.
7. The wind pushed the drumskin, and the empty drum boomed. The giant was only air, wood, and a loose hide.
8. The fox filled his basket and nibbled a berry. The wind boomed once more, but this time he looked first.
