The Man Who Tried to Please Everyone With One DonkeyA parent and child keep changing how they travel because strangers complain, and learn that pleasing everyone can leave no one wise.
1. At sunrise, Tomas walked to market with his daughter, Lina, and their small gray donkey. The donkey carried a basket of apples, and Lina carried a song.
2. A baker called out, “Why walk beside a donkey when you could ride?” Tomas thanked him. Then Tomas climbed onto the donkey.
3. Soon, a grandmother shook her head. “Poor Lina must walk while you ride.” Tomas slid down. Lina climbed onto the donkey instead.
4. A young man called, “How rude! The little one rides while her father walks.” Lina climbed down at once. Tomas and Lina walked together.
5. The road grew hot. Tomas and Lina climbed onto the donkey together. Two travelers gasped, “That is too much weight!”
6. Tomas had an idea. He and Lina tied the donkey’s rope to a sturdy pole. They lifted the donkey between them.
7. At the bridge, everyone stared. The donkey dangled in its sling, looking more surprised than anyone. Then Lina began to laugh.
8. Tomas set the pole down. He sat beside Lina and rubbed his tired arms. “We changed every time someone complained,” he said.
9. Lina picked up the basket. “Let us choose what is kind and sensible,” she said. They walked to market, side by side, and did not change for every voice.
10. They reached the market with apples to sell and energy to spare. The donkey received a juicy carrot. Tomas and Lina shared a proud smile.
