The Shoes That Danced After Midnight

A hidden path explains why twelve pairs of shoes are worn out each morning, and careful watching solves what guessing could not.

The whole story

1. At dusk, Mira carried her brass lantern to the cobbler’s shop. Twelve pairs of shoes stood in a neat row outside.

2. Every morning, the shoes were worn out. Their soles were dusty, and their laces were loose. “Who wears twelve pairs in one night?” Mira asked.

3. Mira studied the floor. A thin trail of dust led from the shoes to the back door. “That is a clue,” she said.

4. They guessed it was foxes. Then they guessed it was ghosts. Mira sprinkled flour by the door. “Tonight, we will watch instead of guess.”

5. At midnight, the workshop grew still. Mira and the cobbler hid behind a cupboard. They watched the flour and waited.

6. The clock whispered twelve chimes. Then the shoes tipped their toes together. One pair slipped through the flour, and eleven pairs followed.

7. Behind the door was a hidden path. It curled through the garden, under the moonflowers, and into the orchard.

8. The shoes danced around a silver puddle. They tapped over stones, twirled through grass, and wore themselves out before dawn.

9. By dawn, the shoes stood back in their row. The flour showed every turn of their secret journey. Careful watching had solved what guessing could not.

10. Mira left a silver bell beside the shoes. That night, she would listen as well as watch. The shoes had a path, and Mira knew where it began.
