The Table That Filled Itself at One Kind Word

A magic table rewards care and honesty, while greedy hands learn that gifts can be lost when trust is broken.

The whole story

1. On a golden afternoon, Mara carried a basket of apples into her grandmother’s cottage. In the middle of the kitchen stood a little wooden table.

2. Grandmother gave Mara a cloth and a brass key. “Please care for the table,” she said. “It listens for kind words.”

3. Mara rubbed the table until it shone. “Thank you for helping us,” she whispered. The empty bowl filled with a warm honey cake.

4. Mara shared the cake with Grandmother and the hungry cat. The table filled with apple slices, warm tea, and enough honey for everyone.

5. Mara’s cousin Theo arrived before supper. He saw the shining table and pressed both hands to his stomach. “Can it make anything?” he asked.

6. “Only when we care for it and speak honestly,” Mara said. Theo nodded. Then he whispered, “Please give me one pastry.”

7. The table gave Theo one pastry. Theo took three more and tucked them behind his back. “I did not,” he said when Mara asked.

8. The table’s golden glow winked out. The bowl became empty, and the pastries behind Theo’s back became plain pebbles.

9. Theo opened his hands. “I took them,” he said. “I was greedy, and then I lied.” The kitchen grew very quiet.

10. Theo returned the pebbles and cleaned every crumb. He shared his last apple with Mara. “I am sorry,” he said.

11. The table did not fill at once. Theo waited, helped, and told the truth all morning. They ate a simple breakfast together.

12. At noon, Theo said, “May we have enough to share?” The table shone again and filled with bread, berries, and honey cakes.

13. Mara and Theo carried the food outside for the neighbors. Theo took one cake, then stopped and asked, “Who would like the next one?”

14. That evening, the table held one cake for Mara and Theo. It had learned their hands could be trusted again, and one kind word could make room for everyone.
