The Crow Who Raised the Water One Pebble at a Time

A thirsty crow cannot reach water in a pitcher, so she patiently drops pebbles until the water rises to her beak.

The whole story

1. At sunrise, a small adult female crow with glossy charcoal-black feathers, a warm gray beak, bright dark-brown eyes, and slender dark-gray legs, wearing a tiny faded red ribbon tied around her left ankle, searched the meadow for a drink.

2. Behind the garden wall, she found a clay pitcher. There was water inside, but it sat far below the rim.

3. She stretched her neck down. She reached with her beak. Still, the water was too low.

4. The crow sat on a stone and thought. Then she noticed the round pebbles scattered near her feet.

5. She picked up one pebble. It was small, but it was a start.

6. Plop went the first pebble. The water gave a little ripple.

7. She carried another pebble, and another. Each one made a small plop.

8. The work took time. The sun climbed high, and the water rose a little.

9. She did not hurry. She carried one more pebble and placed it gently inside.

10. At last, the water rose to her beak. The crow took a long, cool drink.

11. She looked at the pebbles, then at the full pitcher. One small idea had become enough to drink.
