1. At sunrise, Eli led the village sheep to the green hill above the rooftops. He liked the wide sky, the soft grass, and the sound of bells.
2. By noon, Eli was tired of standing still. He cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted, “Wolf! A wolf is chasing the sheep!”
3. The bakers, farmers, and potter hurried up the hill. They found no wolf. Eli laughed until his cheeks hurt. “It was only a trick,” he said.
4. The villagers frowned. “Calling for help is serious,” said Mara the baker. “Do not use our trust for a joke.” Eli nodded, but his smile stayed tucked behind his hand.
5. A week later, Eli shouted again. “Wolf! Come quickly!” The villagers dropped their baskets and tools and climbed the hill.
6. Again, there was no wolf. Eli bowed like an actor on a stage. This time, nobody laughed. “We cannot keep leaving our work for false alarms,” said the potter.
7. That evening, Eli noticed that no one waved to him from the village. He tapped his staff against the stones and wished he had told the truth from the start.
8. The next afternoon, a real wolf appeared beyond the stone wall. The sheep pressed close together, and Eli’s hands began to shake.
9. “Wolf! Please help!” Eli called. “This time it is real!” His voice carried across the fields.
10. The villagers heard him. They looked at one another. “It may be another trick,” said Mara. No one moved at first.
11. Eli planted his staff and gathered the sheep behind him. He called once more, but the hill stayed quiet.
12. At last, the villagers came running. Together, they guided the sheep away, and the wolf slipped back toward the hills.
13. Eli thanked them. “I should have believed you,” said the baker. “We should have believed you,” Eli answered. “But I used up belief before I needed it.”
14. After that, Eli told the truth, even when it was dull. Trust did not return in a day. Each honest word helped build it back.
