The Wolf Who Wore Wool to Dinner

A wolf hides among sheep by wearing a fleece, but the disguise leads him into the very danger he planned for others.

The whole story

1. At late afternoon, a large gray wolf named Wren found a fleece beside the meadow. He held it up and smiled. “Tonight, I shall dine with the sheep.”

2. Wren wrapped the fleece around his body. His silver-gray fur disappeared, but his long tail did not. He tied it neatly under the wool.

3. Wren lowered his head and joined the flock. The sheep made room. No one noticed the sharp ears beneath the soft wool.

4. Wren waited for the flock to wander away from the farm. He pictured a quiet table, a warm loaf, and one plump sheep for supper.

5. Then the farmer opened the gate. “Inside, everyone,” she called. Wren stepped forward with the flock, although he had planned to lead them somewhere else.

6. Inside, the farmer served vegetable soup, crusty bread, and sweet apples. Wren sat at the end of the table. Before him, she placed the biggest empty platter.

7. Wren swallowed. The farmer picked up a carving knife. “This fleece is wonderfully thick,” she said. “It will make a fine winter blanket.”

8. Wren sprang up, but the fleece caught on the stool. The farmer tugged once. The wool slipped down, and two silver-gray ears popped out.

9. The sheep gasped. Wren stopped with one paw in the air. The farmer looked at him, then at the empty platter.

10. Wren bowed his head. The farmer gave him soup instead. “You may eat with us,” she said, “but never trick this flock again.”

11. Wren left with a full belly and the fleece under his arm. He had planned to bring danger to the sheep, but his disguise had brought him straight to the dinner table.

12. Wren spread the fleece beneath the apple tree and shared his bread with a hungry rabbit. He never wore wool to dinner again.
