3. The beavers pushed willow sticks into the mud. They packed the gaps with reeds, roots, and clumps of grass.
4. The stream pressed against the little wall. The young beaver pressed back. “Hold fast,” said the adult beaver.
5. By noon, the wall was taller, but a hole opened near the bottom. Water slipped through with a cheeky little gurgle.
6. The young beaver carried reeds to the gap. The adult beaver packed mud around them. Together, they made the wall snug.
7. At last, the dam held. The rushing stream slowed, and water gathered behind the wall in a shining new pond.
8. A minnow slipped into the deeper water. A frog found a cool log, and tiny insects gathered among the reeds.
9. A heron stepped into the shallows. Dragonflies skimmed the pond, and birds came to drink at its quiet edge.
10. The beavers had built more than a wall. Their dam slowed the stream and made deeper water, where fish, frogs, insects, and birds could all find shelter.
