The Grassland Fire That Made Room for Green Shoots

A natural grassland fire can clear old dry plants, return nutrients to soil, and help some new growth start quickly.

The whole story

1. On a warm summer morning, Nia searched the grassland for tiny green shoots. The old grass stood tall and dry around her.

2. Nia lifted a crunchy stem. Beneath it, a little plant was squeezed under a blanket of old leaves.

3. Mara, the grassland ranger, came to check the dry fields. She pointed to a pale curl of smoke far beyond the ridge.

4. It was a natural grassland fire, watched carefully by Mara. The flames stayed inside a cleared patch and ate the old, dry plants.
