2. Kito waited. No paws crunched through the snow. No tails appeared between the trees. He tried again, louder.
3. Then a song floated back from the far ridge. Kito’s ears sprang up. Someone had heard him.
4. Kito answered with three bright notes. The distant wolf answered with two. Their voices made a path through the trees.
5. At last, Kito found the traveler. The older wolf was called Mara. She belonged to Kito’s pack.
6. Mara led Kito home by following his song. The pack greeted them with wagging tails and soft whines.
7. Mara showed Kito how the pack sang together. One voice began, and the others joined.
8. That evening, the pack prepared to travel. Their song gathered every wolf close before they set out.
9. Kito listened for every voice. If a wolf fell behind, the song could call that wolf back.
10. Across the valley, another pack heard them. Kito’s pack sang clearly, saying, “We are here. This is our home.”
11. Kito finally understood. Wolves howl to find each other, strengthen their group, and warn other packs that the area is already taken.
