The whole story

1. At sunrise, Lila waded to the edge of a mangrove forest with her hand lens ready. She wanted to find the quiet place where young fish began their lives.

2. The mangrove roots curled above the salty water like a great wooden maze. Lila searched between them, but the pools were empty.

3. Then a small wave rolled in. It bumped the shore, swirled the mud, and turned the water brown. Lila held her blue bag close and stepped onto a flat root.

4. A tiny silver fish flickered beside her boot and vanished. Lila crouched, but the next wave covered the little hiding place with cloudy water.

5. She almost hurried away. Then she noticed that the water behind the roots was still, while the water beyond them was choppy.

6. Lila waited with her knees in the warm mud. Each wave met the tangled roots, broke into smaller ripples, and left a little more mud caught between the branches.

7. As the water cleared, three young fish appeared in the quiet spaces. They tucked beneath the roots, where the open sea could not toss them about.

8. Lila lowered her hand lens and kept her hands still. She did not need to chase the fish; the mangrove had already made them a sheltered nursery.
