1. At sunrise, a young sea otter found a clam in the kelp forest. It was round, shiny, and tightly shut.
2. The otter tugged and tugged. The clam stayed shut, as stubborn as a tiny treasure chest.
3. The otter tried a mussel, too. It squeezed, twisted, and gave the shell a very serious stare.
4. Then the otter noticed a smooth gray stone. It was just the right size for a paw.
5. The otter placed the clam on its belly. It held the stone above the shell and paused.
6. Tap. The stone met the shell. Nothing happened, except for one little crack.
7. Tap, tap. The crack grew wider, and the clam opened at last.
8. That evening, the sea otter floated on its back and used the stone as a tool to crack open its hard-shelled dinner.
