The Salmon That Swam Back to the Beginning

Salmon travel from river to ocean and back again, using scent and other clues to return to their birth stream.

The whole story

1. At dawn, a young sockeye salmon with silver-blue scales and a bright red stripe along her sides rested in a mountain stream. She had been born there, but she wanted to see the wide ocean.

2. She turned downstream. The river carried her past willows, pebbles, and beavers' quiet ponds.

3. The little stream joined a bigger river, and the bigger river opened into the ocean. At last, the salmon reached the salt water.

4. The ocean was enormous. The salmon found shining schools, cool currents, and plenty of food. She grew strong beneath the rolling waves.

5. Seasons changed. One cool morning, the salmon tasted the water and stopped eating. Something in the current tugged at her.

6. She swam toward the river mouth. The water tasted fresh, cold, and familiar, though she had not been there for years.

7. The river pushed against her. She used her strong tail and leaped over the rapids, one bright splash at a time.

8. At a fork, two streams slipped between the trees. The salmon paused. One smelled like wet stones and pine. The other smelled like something she knew.

9. She chose the second stream. Its scent rose from the stones, the moss, and the forest soil. Her body remembered the way.

10. She reached the quiet place where her journey had begun. In the clean gravel, she made a safe nest for the next beginning.

11. Salmon travel from river to ocean and back again. They use scent, currents, the shape of the land, and other clues to return to the stream where they were born.
